We are campers and nature lovers. Therefore, we compensate with our partner ClimatePartner for each kilometer and the associated CO2 emissions by a compensatory payment for an ecological project.
All our activities leave an ecological footprint, including your holiday with a camper. Our campers burn fuel and emit CO2. We document all kilometres driven and offset the calculated CO2 emissions by supporting the selected climate projects.
We currently support two different climate projects with the help of our partner Climatepartner. For more details on the projects and sustainability at FreewayCamper in general, please visit our sustainability info page.
The most advanced engine technology (Euro 6d-temp) of our campers ensures a particularly low emissions . Therefore, all of our campers meet the highest emissions standards and therefore are eligible to enter into any European city.
During the winter months there are certain things you have to pay extra attention to due to the lower temperatures. These are mainly concerning gas storage, use of water in the camper and insulation. When you pick up your camper you will get a detailed briefing on these issues, but you can also read up on certain points in the FAQs.
Of course you can heat your camper. All of our campers have a parking heater, so it is always nice and warm in your camper. In our VW models this is a diesel heater, the Campervan models as well as the Knaus are equipped with a gas heater.
For a comfortable camping experience the right temperature inside the camper is crucial. If the water system is used and therefore there is water in the tank and in the pipes, the camper must be heated continuously to at least 8 degrees, otherwise the water system will be seriously damaged. Of course it is not always necessary to heat at the highest level, but depending on the needs and situation. We recommend the following temperature settings: 18-22 degrees when staying in the camper, 16-18 degrees at night, 8-9 degrees when leaving the camper. When leaving the VW Bulli model, the pop-up roof should also be closed so that not too much heat gets lost (also with Calicap). We also recommend regular airing to ensure a pleasant room climate.
How long your gas supply will last depends, of course, on the type of use and duration.
In the VW models, you use the gas exclusively for cooking (equipment: 1x approx. 3 kg gas bottle), which normally lasts 6 months.
In our campervan and motorhome models, you use the gas for cooking, heating and hot water. At least one full gas cylinder is installed here (approx. 11 kg). In summer, the gas will normally last for about 4 weeks, but this figure is highly variable in the winter months and depends on certain factors. With differentiated use of the heating (i.e. turn the heating down at night and when leaving the camper) and an outside temperature of around 0 degrees, an 11 kg gas bottle is sufficient for approx. 3 days.
In case of longer booking periods and intensive use of gas, it can happen that a gas bottle has to be replaced. To exchange the gas bottle you have for example the following possibilities: conventional DIY stores, various gas stations and dealers of the company Scharr.
Yes, but there are a few important things to consider if the outside temperature is 6 degrees or less. During the winter months, due to the cold temperatures, the campers are handed over completely drained of water so that no water can freeze in the system and thus damage the entire water system. So if water is used during the rental period the camper must be heated continuously (at least 8 degrees) to prevent damage.
We recommend the following differentiated use of the heating in the Knaus and the campervan models: 18-22 degrees when staying in the camper, 16-18 degrees at night, 8-9 degrees when leaving the camper.
The VW Bulli models should be heated at least to level 3. In addition, the waste water tank drain cock must be left open all the time. A detailed explanation and briefing will take place on site when picking up the vehicle.
The water should never freeze, therefore it is absolutely necessary to heat the camper starting from an outside temperature of 6 degrees or lower as soon as there is water in the system. We recommend a differentiated heating (always at least 8 degrees inside the camper). In addition, the waste water tap must always be left open and the grey water must be collected in an additional tank (for a grey water disposal in accordance with regulations). Furthermore the water system must be completely emptied when returning the camper. A detailed explanation and instruction will be given to you when you pick up the camper on site, so that any questions can be clarified.
There are also a few important aspects to consider before returning or not using the water: Fresh water tank, waste water tank and pipes must be completely emptied. When emptying, never let the water run out via the pipes, but always via the direct opening for emptying the water tank (Campervan models: rotating wheel on the water tank in the trunk; VW Bulli models: red lever above the gas cylinder in the trunk; Knaus motorhome: black lever in the service module on the driver's side). For a complete emptying the water pumps can be switched off first and then the water residues can be emptied by opening the tap and activating the toilet flush (do not forget to turn off the tap!). The exact places for all important pivots will be shown to you again during the briefing, so that at the end of the day there are no questions left unanswered.
During the winter months, due to the cold temperatures, campers are handed over completely empty. In general it is possible to fill the water tank privately or on campgrounds, but if this is not possible, other places offer possibilities to fill the tank: Campsite App park4night, App Truck Parking Europe or similar to find freeway service stations with water access. Please note that in all our camper models only clean drinking water may be filled into the water tank.
The windows of the camper represent certain cold bridges that are less well insulated than the rest of the vehicle, and heat can always escape through them to the outside. Of course, you can counteract the cold effect with heating. To reduce the amount of heating required, we recommend insulating the strongest cold bridges of the individual models. For the VW Bullis, the windscreens can be additionally insulated with external insulation mats and the roof tent with the Calicap. For the Campervan models, we also offer exterior insulation for the windscreens. You can simply book this as an additional service when you book and easily fit it during your trip. You can find more information on this topic here: Winter equipment and winter camping.
Currently, our winter equipment can only be booked in the winter months.

What is the new "Book Campsites Online" section on FreewayCamper about?
With the direct online booking option for campgrounds, we are responding to the wishes of our customers to be able to book not only high-quality camper vans but also campsites of the same type easily and directly online at FreewayCamper. At FreewayCamper there are no inquiry or reservation options.
How does the "Book campsites online" feature on FreewayCamper work?
As you are used to from FreewayCamper, booking is simple and as short as possible so that your next adventure is not hindered by a lengthy booking process. There are no forms to fill out or wait for campsite confirmation. The bookings are always binding for both parties, the campsite operator and the customer.
Step 1: Enter arrival & departure date, number of travelers (adults & children) and the desired location for your next adventure
First you click on "campsites" on the website above the search bar to get to the "Book campsites online" section. The search mask changes slightly and you can enter your desired arrival & departure date, the number of travelers (adults & children) and the desired location for your next adventure. Now click on "Search" and FreewayCamper will provide you with an overview of the matching results.
Alternatively, you can click on "Book Campsite" in the navigation bar at the top of the page and select one of the options offered.
Step 2 : Filter search results
Both ways lead you to the result page. There you will see all campsites that match your search criteria. FreewayCamper offers you more filter options to further specify your selection:
Under Location you can choose if you are looking for a campsite by the sea or in the mountains. Further criteria are for example lake, river, nature, near the city.
Under specials you can choose your preferences regarding the basic orientation of the campsite. Available here are criteria such as family-friendly, pet-friendly, sports-oriented, Digital Detox, wellness, luxury, open all year round and also nudism (naturism) is not neglected.
Under facilities you will find numerous filtering possibilities that the campsite should offer, such as a restaurant, a store, playground, facilities for the disabled and so on and so forth.
The activities filter allows you to narrow down the search results according to specific leisure activities that you are planning for your next adventure. The activities are not necessarily offered directly by the campsite, but there is the possibility to practice them in the surrounding area.
In addition, you can choose if it is important to you that your pet is wanted and that appropriate facilities are available.
The official stars indicate how many stars the campsite has been awarded. These official stars are awarded on the basis of certain criteria such as equipment and facilities. They do not reflect a customer rating.
If you want to use other customers' ratings as a criterion, you can do so under reviews.
There is also the possibility to limit the search to certain regions.
The type of accommodation can also be a useful criterion for your next adventure. Here you can choose between the classic pitches or tent sites as well as a luxury tent or bungalow.
Last but not least, you can also use the number of pitches to determine the size of the campsite for your next adventure.
Step 3: Select campsite
Now you can choose the perfect campsite for your next adventure from the filtered result list. It will match your filter criteria exactly and will meet your needs. If you click on this campsite, you will be taken to the detail page of this campsite. There you will find a gallery with some pictures. In this way you can get a concrete impression of the campsite.
In the features section you can find out everything you need to know about your favorite campsite. Under Features you can see what makes the campsite stand out from the rest. Under Facilities you can find an overview of all facilities on this campsite. Activities gives you an overview of the activities you can plan on site. In the description you can read the description of the campsite. The address helps you and a navigation system to find the fastest way to your next adventure. The cancellation conditions help you to get a certain planning security especially in times of Covid-19.
Below you will find the accommodations available for your search criteria on this campsite with the corresponding "from prices". This means that the actual price can be higher, since additional services like electricity are usually booked in addition. You can do this in the next step.
Step 4: Simply book the campsite directly
Click on book and you will get to the booking section. This can vary from campsite to campsite, as we work together with different partner companies that provide us with the booking route. In all cases, the booking route is as short and simple as possible. You can specify the number of travelers and book additional services. Then you pay for the booking conveniently by credit card and receive a booking confirmation by email. With this confirmation you will then report to the reception on the campsite on the day of arrival. Some campsites only use the credit card to secure the booking. You will pay for your adventure on the day of departure at the campsite.
How can I pay and how can I modify or cancel a booking?
For all information concerning payment, modification of your stay, or cancellation of a booking, we invite you to directly contact the campsite for which your booking has been made. You will find the contact details of the campsite in the confirmation e-mail of your booking.

Why are no campsites displayed on the results page after applying the filters?
If no more campsites are shown in the results list, you should delete some filters or select them differently. Maybe there is also no suitable accommodation available for the date given. In that case please try another period.
Important: If a campsite has not entered a criterion, it will not be shown even if you have selected this criterion. This means that only those campsites will appear in the search results list that actually meet your criteria. We therefore urge campsites to keep their details as complete and up-to-date as possible. However, the responsibility for this lies entirely on the part of the campsite operators. FreewayCamper accepts no liability or guarantee for this information.
Where does the information for the campsites come from?
The information on the campsites (comparative price, location, facilities, etc.) is generally set and updated by the campsites themselves. We regularly try to inform the operators to keep their information up to date. In case of incorrect information, FreewayCamper reserves the right to correct the information or to delete the entire campsite from the database.
How can I rate campsites on FreewayCamper?
You can rate a campsite by going to the campsite detail page and scrolling down to the customer ratings. Give your review a descriptive title so that other campers can quickly see what your basic impression was. Give a brief description of the advantages and disadvantages of the campsite and finish your comment quickly and easily. Now you have made your valuable contribution to help the other campers get a good impression of the camp site. Your ratings are all included in the filters in the search. This way you help other campers with every single rating.
